Walmart is expanding its presence in Canada, with a plan to open its first Korean BBQ joint in Calgary in the coming months.
In an announcement Wednesday, Walmart said it plans to open a “Khoi BBQ” in Calgary’s Little Italy neighbourhood, a new addition to its existing Korean BBQ operations in Calgary and Vancouver.
“We’re excited to be opening the doors of our first Khoi Barbecue in Calgary,” Walmart Canada CEO Greg McLeod said in a statement.
“The city is a perfect location for our Khois BBQs, and the city is an ideal location for this one.”
McLeod said the Calgary location will be the first of its kind in Canada.
“Our Khoisan BBQ will be an authentic Korean BBQ experience with the best barbecue available,” he said.
“It will be a great addition to our Khaanbao” chain of restaurants.
McLeod also announced that a second location is being planned for Little Italy in the next few months.
“When the first Khaani Barbecue opens, we will be able to provide a great place for our guests to enjoy a great selection of Korean BBQ, and we look forward to welcoming our guests and the community to our new location in Calgary, as well,” he added.
McLennan said the expansion will help to “add to our footprint” in Canada and is part of Walmart’s efforts to expand in Asia.
McDonald’s is the third company in Asia to open Korean BBQ restaurants.
In August, the company said it would open a restaurant in Beijing.
And last month, Walmart announced that it would be opening its first U.S. Korean BBQ restaurant in the Phoenix area.
In its announcement, Walmart noted that its Canadian restaurant will be located at the same Calgary location it is currently operating.
The company said its expansion will create 1,000 jobs and generate $1.5 million in annual economic activity.
Walmart is expected to open Khaans BBQ in Little Italy by the end of the year.
McKenzie said the company is “very excited” to expand its Canadian operations and that it will be opening new stores and stores in other parts of the country.
The Calgary location is expected a first for Walmart, which is the first U, European and Asian company to open such a location.
McLean said the expanded location will also help to fill the growing demand for its Khaangbao brand of Korean barbecue.
“As we continue to expand our global footprint, we are looking forward to opening more Khaaan BBQs across Canada, including Calgary,” he noted.
“This expansion will add to our existing Korean barbecue operations in Canada to help fill our expanding demand.”
McKneely said Walmart has more than 100,000 stores in Canada today.
